Making New Friends

The first weekend in April I had the opportunity to play tour guide to two American sisters, Katie & Meghan, that were in Paris for the marathon.  To clarify, I did not know these sisters until I met them at the airport here in Paris.  I had been emailing back and forth with them before their arrival but I had never met either of them before.  My mom works with one of the sisters and so that is how all of this came to be.  It was so much fun meeting new people and getting to share with them the beauty of Paris.    We did lots of things while they were here and even had some adventures or two along the way.

I picked them up at the airport early on Saturday morning and helped them get to their apartment that they were renting.  It was in an awesome location, literally right behind the Musée D'Orsay.  Anyways, on our way to the apartment our first adventure commenced.  We were changing from the RER B to the RER C at Saint Michel waiting on the platform for a train to come.  The train arrives and the crowds are horrible; Meghan gets on first with her luggage and Katie gets on second, just barely making it on without being squished by the closing doors.  I'm still standing on the platform watching the doors close before my eyes and trying to communicate to them to get off at the next stop and wait for me there.  As I'm waiting for the next train to arrive I'm hoping and praying that they got the message.  Thankfully they did because once I got off at the next stop they were sitting there waiting patiently for me.  After dropping off their stuff and them freshening up a bit we had some lunch at a little place that I know in the area and then we headed out to explore and get some Berthillon's ice cream.

On Sunday I headed into Paris bright and early because Meghan was running in the Paris marathon and  I was going to be meeting up with Katie to cheer on her sister.  This was my first time ever watching a marathon and it was so much fun!  We had planned out three different spots of where we would be along the course of the race so that Meghan could keep an eye out for us.  It was great running around the city and seeing all the runners.  Katie had made a sign on a bright blue poster board for Meghan and it was so funny because we were the only ones holding a sign, clearly Europeans don't do stuff like that.

Standing along la Rue de Rivoli early on a Sunday morning is one of the best things.  It is so quiet and there is practically nobody out and about

I met up with Katie and we got hot chocolate from Angelina's in to go cups and headed over to the Château de Vincennes because that was to be the next point where Meghan was to keep an eye out for us.  We literally just made it in time which was such a blessing!  We walked over to where the course was and Katie stuck her head through the crowd and literally five seconds later Meghan ran past!  We couldn't get over how perfect timing that was.

We then made our way over to la Seine near the Louvre and had to wait a bit before we saw Meghan run past but it was great fun and the view wasn't too bad either.

We met up with Meghan when she finished the race and she did a fantastic job.  It was a great day and lots of fun getting to experience the excitement of a marathon.

On Monday I met up with Katie & Meghan in the afternoon and we went over to Notre Dame and there happened to be a rehearsal going on for a concert the next day so that was cool.  We also checked out the Luxembourg gardens and I took them over to my favorite crêpe stand in that area.

They were really good

On Tuesday I met up with Katie & Meghan one last time in the afternoon before they headed off to London.  We met in front of the Musée D'Orsay and had a nice time checking it out.  Our second little adventure happened on our way out of the museum.  They took the elevator down and I decided to take the stairs because the elevator was full, I told them I would meet them down there.  Well when I get down they are no where to be found.  I was searching everywhere in the museum and was starting to get a bit concerned because they don't speak French and they don't know the city that well.  After a half hour or longer of searching and not knowing where else to look I finally decided to sit in the middle section and wait because if they were still in the museum they would most likely pass through there.  So I'm sitting there waiting and I get a text message and open it and it is from Katie saying that they were waiting outside.  As I was starting to walk towards the exit I hear my name called and there is Meghan at the top of the stairs.  I was so thankful that I'd found them because I was starting to get concerned that something had happened to them.  I guess somehow we kept missing each other because they both came back in and were searching for me and I was searching for them.  It was quite the adventure to say the least.  The part that I found funny was that they were really concerned about me thinking that something had happened to me and I was like, "no, I'm fine, I was concerned about you guys because I speak the language and know the city and whatnot."  After that we went over to my favorite chocolate store (where one of the ladies that works there recognized me; I don't know if I should take that as a good sign or a bad one) which was greatly needed.  We had a great time exploring the city and ate dinner together before I headed back to the house for the night.

It was such a wonderful time meeting fellow Americans and getting to share Paris with them.  We had some great adventures along the way and in the process I made two new friends.  Hopefully they enjoyed the city and will be able to get back to explore more of what France has to offer.

Becca in Paris!

This time around I have been very blessed with many visitors coming over to France.  It has made for a lot of fun adventures throughout the year.  My friend, Becca, from student teaching came over to Paris for a week during her spring break.  I unfortunately had to work while she was here but we still had a great time running around Paris.  She has never been to Europe before so what better place to start than Paris?  We rented an apartment in the 8th that was just a 10 minute (not even) walk to the Arc de Triomphe.

Sunday, March 23rd:
Got up early and saw the sunrise from the apartment.  Checked the flight status and her flight was getting in an hour and twenty minutes late!

I got to the airport and had to wait for a bit before Becca came out but it was great getting to see her!  I guess her flight was delayed by 2 hours because the pilot was at home taking a nap and forgot to wake up!  We got into Paris, dropped off her bags and headed over to the Arc de Triomphe.  It of course started raining like crazy and was really windy so we popped into a café.

We kept it pretty chill and just hung out at the apartment for the rest of the day.

Monday, March 24th:
Today I didn't have school so that was exciting!  It was also my birthday so we celebrated by going out to one of my favorite little restaurants in the 11th.  Later in the day we did the typical touristy things like visiting the Louvre, Musée de l'Orangerie and Place de la Concorde.

We had such beautiful weather which was great for a busy day out and about in Paris!

Tuesday, March 25th:
Today I had school in the morning and my students didn't show up so that was frustrating.  Anyways, afterwards I met up with Becca at the apartment and we then went out to lunch at a café in the 11th.  We had a late lunch but it was good.  We then went over to the chocolate shop to buy some much needed chocolate.  Later in the day we headed over to fnac (the equivalent of Barnes&Noble and Best Buy combined) so Becca could pick up a book since she had finished the only book she brought with her.  I of course picked up a book too and am now reading, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.  I couldn't resist even though it is in English and I told myself I'd only read in French.

Wednesday, March 26th:
I had classes in the morning and for lunch met up with Becca over by Notre Dame.  We picked up sandwiches at a little bakery on Ile St. Louis and ate them in a park at the tip of the island.

We of course had to stop and get some Berthillon's ice cream; it was delicious as usual.  I got blood orange and vanilla.  It was so good as usual.

I then had to go back to school for my afternoon classes and when I got back to the apartment we headed on over to the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe.  The Champs-Élysées was actually blocked off because the Chinese president was in town.  The traffic around that area looked absolutely horrible! I'm so glad I don't have to drive in this city.  We were able to walk up and down the sidewalk a bit on the Champs-Élysées and then we made the climb up the Arc de Triomphe.

Thursday, March 27th:
Today I didn't have any classes so that was really nice.  We had a super chill morning and then went over to Tartes Chez Moi for lunch, where we went on Monday (Becca really liked it there too).  In the afternoon we headed over to Galeries Lafayette to pick up some Pierre Hermé macaroons and then we made our way over to Notre Dame to go up the bell towers.  Sadly, we didn't get to see the actual bells; I'm not really sure why but they might have been doing restoration work.

We then made our way over to the crêpe stand by the Luxembourg gardens.  I got a cinnamon & sugar crêpe that was really good.  We hung out in the gardens before making our way over to the Musée D'Orsay where we checked out the art.

Friday, March 28th:
Today I had classes as usual.  During my huge break I ran out to the apartment to grab my duffel bag so that I could take it back out to the suburbs which means it would be just one less thing I'd have to carry on Saturday.  After my afternoon classes were done I met up with Becca at Trocadero so we could check out the Eiffel Tower and then make our way up via the elevator.

Saturday, March 29th:
Today we got up decently early so I could help Becca get to the airport.  We didn't get to do anything touristy but that's alright.  It was sad to see her leave but I'm so glad that she decided to spend her spring break in Paris with me.  I had such a great time despite the fact that I had to work and she got a taste of Paris.  We made it work with my schedule and had lots of fun adventures along the way.
