Sun, Sea & Lots of Gelato

As is customary in France schools get two weeks off for Easter break and for the first part of my break I decided to go to the little beach town of Menton in the south of France.  Menton is on the Côte d'Azur and is located between Monaco and Italy (you can actually see the Italian border from the city).  It is a beautiful area with the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea and at times you feel almost as if you could be in Italy because of the the huge Italian influence on the area and all the Italian you hear when walking around the winding little streets.  I started my journey to Menton on Saturday morning bright and early by heading out to the airport to catch a flight to Nice.  The flight was a bit delayed but it wasn't a huge deal.  When I got to Nice I then had to catch a bus to get to Menton.  I had no clue which stop to get off at in Menton since there were several and I had no map of the city so I had no idea as to how to get to where I was staying.  It was quite the adventure but it all worked out because I found a Tourism Office and was able to get a map there.

I had such a great time in Menton going to the beach and visiting different museums.  Also walking around the streets with a gelato in hand.  It was such a great way to start off my Easter vacation.

I had another great day in Menton just exploring and eating such delicious food.  I even walked over to a great garden called le Palais Carnolès that had a lot of lemon and orange trees (something for which Menton is famous for).

It was fun trying to find the Palais Carnolès with the gardens because it was much further than I thought it was but it was worth the trek with all the gorgeous flowers and orange & lemon trees.

I came across a church and really liked this window with the flowers hanging over it

On Monday I had another busy yet also relaxed kind of day that of course included stopping by the beach.  I visited the Jean Cocteau museum which was very interesting.  Later in the day I headed over to the two churches that were right next to each other.

I then made my way further up the hill to a great viewing point over the city and up to the cemetery that has some awesome views too.

Tuesday I had a busy day with walking down to the lighthouse and going on a walking tour in the afternoon that was very informative.

Wednesday it wasn't so nice out sadly.  It was cold and windy and cloudy so I didn't really get to enjoy the beach on my last full day in Menton but I guess it can't be sunny every day.  I did have a nice day though and I of course ate more gelato and also visited a couple of museums.  The Musée de la Préhistoire and Le Bastion which is the museum that Jean Cocteau picked out for himself.  I also visited  an old house that is now being restored to be a museum about Menton (if I am correct, not 100% sure on that).

Thursday I took a train from Menton to Nice and made it just in time to Nice to catch my train to Paris.  I was nervous there for a bit that I would miss my train since my train from Menton was delayed.  I had such a great time in Menton and it was definitely hard to leave.  It is such a beautiful city and I will gladly go back one day!
